Tehran: Iranian authorities announced Thursday morning that two people were killed in an initial toll from a missile attack launched by US forces on the Shalamcheh border crossing between Iran and Iraq, in Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Khuzestan governorate stated in a statement carried by Iranian television that US missiles struck the passenger terminal at the border crossing, resulting in two deaths, according to initial estimates. The statement added that search and rescue teams are continuing their operations at the site of the attack, confirming that the crossing remains open to traffic.

For several days, the United States has been launching successive waves of strikes on targets inside Iran, while Tehran has responded with missile and drone attacks on military bases and facilities, as well as sites it claims are linked to Washington in countries in the region.

This escalation comes despite the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran last June, which included a cessation of hostilities and the commencement of negotiations to reach a broader agreement. But US President Donald Trump announced on July 8 the end of the ceasefire, following attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz that Washington accused Tehran of orchestrating. The United States then resumed its strikes inside Iran, amid escalating Iranian responses in the region.
