Tehran: In the presence of the Prime Minister and the Iranian President, a number of joint agreements were signed between Baghdad and Tehran. Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian oversaw the signing of a number of agreements and memoranda of understanding between Iraq and Iran on Thursday, during the Prime Minister's official visit to Tehran.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement from the Prime Minister's Media Office detailed that four agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed in Tehran. These agreements aim to strengthen bilateral cooperation and partnership between the two neighboring countries. The agreements include an agreement on international land freight and transport, a memorandum of understanding for extending the railway line from Kermanshah to Khosravi to Khanaqin to Baghdad, a memorandum of understanding for a twinning agreement between the Baghdad Municipality and the Tehran Municipality, and a memorandum of understanding in the field of government administration and human resources training.
The Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Electricity, Finance, and Planning (acting) signed the agreements and memoranda of understanding on behalf of the Iraqi side. During the talks, al-Zaidi emphasized that his visit to the Islamic Republic reflects the depth and renewal of the relationship and represents a bridge of friendship between the two peoples, noting the partnership that unites the two countries in religion, civilization, geography, and culture.
Al-Zaidi explained that the visit aims to discuss issues of concern to both countries and the region. He emphasized that the security of the two countries is intertwined and that Iraq will not allow any threat to Iran to originate from its territory. He recalled Iran's support during Iraq's war against the ISIS terrorist organization and called for joint investments in various fields.
The Iranian President, for his part, expressed gratitude for the noble gesture of the Iraqi people in the funeral procession of Ayatollah Khamenei, highlighting the deep commonalities between the two nations. He stressed that security and stability are crucial and positively impact bilateral development, and pointed to the existence of significant joint investment opportunities between the two countries.
