Baghdad: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) affirmed on Friday that the launch of 5G services in Iraq represents a national achievement and a strategic step towards building a developed digital economy, noting that the 5G rollout marks a new beginning for the digital economy in Iraq. The ITU’s Regional Director for Arab States, Adel Mohammed Darwish, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that “the relationship between the Republic of Iraq and the ITU is witnessing positive momentum, and we look forward to translating this cooperation in the coming phase into initiatives and projects with a tangible impact that serve Iraq and its people.”

According to Iraqi News Agency, Adel Mohammed Darwish emphasized that Iraq’s historical relationship with the ITU, which extends back nearly a century since joining its membership in 1928, is now entering a new phase. In this new phase, Iraq’s presence and contribution are expected to be more effective in the work of the ITU and in shaping the future of communications and information technology at the international level.

He further noted that the ICT Development Index, issued by the International Telecommunication Union, confirms that Iraq continues to make progress in its digital journey. This progress is particularly evident in the spread of internet services and mobile communication networks, which provides an important basis for moving to a more ambitious stage where digital transformation leads economic development.
