Basra: A representative from Basra has spoken out against the alleged mechanism for distributing administrative units in the governorate, stating, “It’s not about political spoils.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Basra MP Qusayr al-Jurani has been closely monitoring media reports suggesting that the mechanism for distributing administrative units in Basra Governorate is being driven by power-sharing and personal gain, rather than focusing on competence, responsibility, and serving the citizens. Al-Jurani, a member of the Sadiqun bloc, expressed his concerns in a statement, emphasizing that if these reports are accurate, it reflects an unacceptable approach. He underscored that administrative units should not be viewed as political spoils but as a national responsibility concerning the welfare of hundreds of thousands of Basra residents. These units should be managed based on standards of competence, integrity, and experience, while also considering the unique characteristics of the districts and sub-districts and maintaining the social, tribal, and community balance within them.
Al-Jurani further elaborated that since the Basra Provincial Council took its legal oath, citizens have been anticipating genuine oversight and a legislative role. However, he questioned the council’s accomplishments, asking what oversight achievements have been made, how many cases have been referred to the Integrity Commission or the judiciary based on its recommendations, and what legislation or decisions have had a direct impact on improving services in the province.
He affirmed that the Basra Provincial Council’s administration would be subject to scrutiny and oversight within the Parliament. Al-Jurani assured that discussions would continue on current events, and support would be extended to any amendments or legislation that promotes efficiency and transparency while preventing executive positions from being used for quotas or power-sharing.
Al-Jurani concluded by asserting that Basra deserves a robust administration, genuine oversight, and institutions that prioritize serving the citizens over narrow interests.
