Baghdad: The Ministry of Agriculture has announced a new mechanism for issuing import licenses through three electronic platforms, emphasizing that the agricultural calendar prohibits the importation of 33 crops.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, Qusay al-Hattab, stated that protecting local crops is achieved by preventing the import of competing crops and supporting farmers, contributing to market balance, particularly at the price level. He highlighted the importance of ensuring an economic return for farmers to avoid financial losses.

Al-Hattab elaborated that the ministry strictly adheres to the agricultural calendar, which bans the import of 33 agricultural products that are available locally. He further explained that the Ministry of Agriculture is committed to Cabinet Resolution No. 23110 of 2023. This resolution mandates the cancellation of import licenses for most goods and commodities brought in through border crossings, with the exception of 14 items restricted for security and health reasons or those with dual use. These items, including live animals, veterinary medicines, seeds and seedlings, and pesticides, still require approval from the relevant sectoral authorities.

He also noted that the Import Division within the Planning and Follow-up Department continues its operations according to organized procedures. Import licenses are issued after obtaining necessary approvals from the relevant sectoral authority and are processed through three electronic platforms.
