Baghdad: Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations organizations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, issued a stern warning about the escalating risk of direct confrontation between nuclear powers due to the nuclear policies of European countries. He argued that these policies do not enhance the security of the nations involved, according to Sputnik.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Gatilov highlighted several troubling developments, including France and Britain’s plans to expand their nuclear capabilities, the UK’s willingness to host American nuclear weapons, and nuclear partnerships involving France with Germany and Poland. Additionally, Berlin’s recent statements about potentially acquiring its own nuclear arsenal add to the concerns.

Gatilov emphasized that such actions undermine the nuclear non-proliferation regime and called it “naive” to think these policies could bolster European security. He warned that these military and technical programs, framed within anti-Russian rhetoric, escalate the danger of a direct nuclear confrontation.

He assured that Russian institutions are responding to this strategic tension by taking all necessary measures to secure Russia’s interests. Russian diplomats are actively working to dissuade what Gatilov terms as “adversaries,” aiming to avert catastrophic global consequences stemming from Western policies.

Gatilov concluded by noting that these diplomatic efforts are being conducted in collaboration with numerous countries via various multilateral platforms, including the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
