Baghdad: The mayor of Safwan, west of Basra, has announced a significant influx of visitors through the Safwan border crossing, following the reopening of the Al-Abdali border crossing.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Dr. Ghassan Bunyan Al-Shuwaili, the mayor of Safwan district, stated that the Safwan crossing has commenced receiving pilgrims traveling to the holy city of Karbala for the Arba’een pilgrimage of Imam Hussein. This movement coincides with the resumption of passenger and trade activities following the reopening of the Al-Abdali crossing by Kuwait, which was previously closed due to recent events.

Al-Shuwaili mentioned that the intervention of Basra’s Governor, Asaad Al-Eidani, played a crucial role in facilitating the movement of pilgrims. Governor Al-Eidani’s recent meeting with the Kuwaiti Minister of Interior helped to restore services for travelers, whose journeys had been disrupted due to damage at the Al-Abdali crossing.

Furthermore, Al-Shuwaili confirmed that all agencies at the Safwan crossing are fully engaged in streamlining entry procedures to ensure smooth passage for the pilgrims. This preparation comes in anticipation of increased traffic during the Arba’een pilgrimage season.
