Ankara: The Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Muhyiddin Salem, will visit Turkey on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments. His visit, scheduled for July 28 and 29, will include talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, focusing on enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, sources in the Turkish Foreign Ministry have indicated that Fidan will reaffirm Turkey’s support for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. The discussions are expected to highlight Turkey’s diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability in Sudan.

The agenda includes exploring ways to strengthen economic, trade, energy, education, and cultural ties, while emphasizing the importance of a robust legal framework for cooperation between Ankara and Khartoum. The Turkish side is also set to discuss ongoing humanitarian aid to Sudan and the potential role of Turkish companies in reconstruction efforts. The ministers will exchange views on regional and international issues, including developments in the Horn of Africa.

A memorandum of understanding will be signed between the Diplomatic Academy of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diplomatic Institute of Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, aimed at enhancing diplomatic training and development.

Turkey and Sudan’s diplomatic relations, established in 1957, gained momentum in 2017 with the creation of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Sudan. Recent interactions have included high-level visits, such as Sudanese Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s visit to Turkey in December 2015 and Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris’s visit in May, which coincided with the 16th session of the Joint Economic Committee.

Despite challenges in Sudan, trade between the two countries reached approximately $390 million in 2015. Turkey has continued humanitarian efforts, sending eight ships with relief supplies and medical aid to combat Sudan’s cholera outbreak.

The visit underscores the ongoing commitment to fostering strong diplomatic and economic ties between Turkey and Sudan, amid regional and international challenges.
