Basra: The mayor of Al-Zubair district, Abbas Maher Al-Saidi, has announced that the pipeline set to replace the open Al-Bid'ah canal will be inaugurated in the middle of next month. This initiative marks a significant development for the district located west of Basra.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Saidi emphasized the concerted efforts being made by the governor and the Ministry of Water Resources to expedite the completion of this project. The new pipeline will replace the existing open canal with a closed system, extending from its source in Dhi Qar Governorate to its outlet in Basra.

Al-Saidi highlighted that the project is being executed by four companies under the Ministry of Water Resources. The pipeline will run parallel to the current canal's route. The completion of this project is expected to address the ongoing water shortage issues in Basra Governorate, particularly in Al-Zubair district. These shortages have been exacerbated by breaches in the sides of the open Al-Bid'ah canal, which have hindered its capacity to accommodate the allocated water quantities for Basra. Consequently, there has been a significant decrease in the water released from Al-Bid'ah to mitigate the risk of further breaches.
