Ankara: Trkiye announces the arrest of a former pilot officer accused of involvement in the assassination attempt against Erdogan. The Turkish Interior Ministry announced on Saturday the arrest of a former pilot officer, dismissed from service, accused of participating in the assassination attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the failed coup attempt carried out by the Fethullah Glen organization on July 15, 2016.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the ministry stated that the suspect was on Interpol's Red Notice list of wanted persons. Counter-terrorism teams from the Afyonkarahisar Security Directorate arrested him after locating his hideout in the western province. The ministry's statement affirmed that Turkey will continue to combat the Fethullah Glen organization and its affiliates with utmost resolve.

In mid-July 2016, Turkey witnessed a coup attempt by a small faction within the military affiliated with the Fethullah Glen organization, who attempted to seize control of key state institutions, including security and media outlets. The Turkish government has declared July 15th of each year "Democracy and National Unity Day" to commemorate the 253 victims killed during the clashes with the coup plotters.
