Damascus: Syria has denounced Colombia’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, labeling the move as lacking legal basis and a violation of international law.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres and the President of the Security Council. The letter expressed Syria’s strong protest against and condemnation of Colombia’s decision.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry argued that Colombia’s recognition is baseless and contravenes international law, contradicting statements by the UN Secretary-General and Security Council Resolution 497 of 1981. This resolution considers Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights null and void. The Ministry also highlighted the growing international support for Syria’s legitimate rights, noting that the number of countries endorsing the General Assembly resolution on the Golan Heights increased from 97 in 2024 to 123 in 2025. Syria reiterated its commitment to defending its sovereignty through diplomatic and legal channels.

Colombia announced its recognition on Monday, citing regional instability in the Middle East and the strategic importance of the Golan Heights for Israel’s security as reasons for its decision.
