New york city: The United Nations has expressed its support for the Turkish Parliament’s recent adoption of the “Promoting National Solidarity and Social Integration” law. The legislation was drafted as part of the “Turkey Without Terrorism” initiative and aims to bolster peace efforts within the nation.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the announcement of support came from Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, during a press conference held at the UN headquarters. Haq stated that the UN is closely monitoring the progress of the law and commended the Turkish government for measures taken towards achieving peace.

The Turkish Parliament voted in favor of the new law on Monday. The legislation includes provisions addressing crimes related to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), including establishing or managing the organization, knowingly supporting it, and other activities linked to terrorism. The law specifies that investigations and trials for crimes with penalties not exceeding 15 years imprisonment will be postponed for five years, except for premeditated murders and crimes before June 1, 2005, which result in life imprisonment.

For offenses warranting penalties exceeding 15 years or life imprisonment, the postponement period extends to 10 years. Both categories require confirmation from security institutions about the organization’s dissolution and disarmament, with a formal decision from the National Security Council published in the Official Gazette.

The law also establishes a council led by the Turkish Vice President to oversee its implementation. This council includes key government officials, such as Ministers of Justice, Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Defense, as well as heads of national intelligence and security organizations. The council’s role is to ensure effective monitoring, coordination, and execution of the law’s objectives, particularly concerning the PKK’s presence and disarmament.
