Cairo: The Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, is set to visit Egypt on Thursday to engage in discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and addressing regional developments. During his visit, Fidan will meet with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdel-Aty, and other key Egyptian officials.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Fidan and Abdel-Aty will co-chair the second meeting of the Joint Planning Group between Turkey and Egypt, involving officials from both nations. This meeting will focus on the outcomes of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council’s second meeting, which took place in Cairo on February 4th, as well as preparations for the Council’s third meeting slated for 2028 in Turkey. Additionally, Fidan is scheduled to hold talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
The discussions are expected to cover a broad range of topics, including political, economic, trade, and military relations. The two sides aim to boost bilateral trade to $15 billion by 2025, up from approximately $8 billion. They will also explore cooperation in transportation, energy, infrastructure, and mining sectors, alongside military and defense collaboration.
Regionally, the talks will address the situation in Gaza, Syria, Libya, Sudan, and the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as developments in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Fidan is likely to emphasize Turkey’s support for diplomatic efforts to reestablish the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and ensure humanitarian aid access to Gaza.
The discussions will also include exchanging views on the second phase of the Gaza peace plan, Israeli actions in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria, and strengthening the international stance on regional issues. Fidan is expected to affirm Turkey’s commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity, Libya’s stability, and Sudan’s sovereignty.
Turkish-Egyptian relations have seen significant momentum through high-level visits and communications. Trade between the two countries reached about $8 billion in 2025, with Turkish investments in Egypt surpassing $4 billion. Turkish-capitalized companies in Egypt provide employment for approximately 100,000 Egyptians.
The Turkish-Egyptian Joint Planning Group, established in 2024, aims to prepare for Strategic Cooperation Council meetings and enhance coordination in various cooperative areas. Its inaugural meeting was held in Turkey in November 2025, chaired by the foreign ministers of both countries.
