Baghdad: Mayor Ammar Musa Kadhim affirmed on Friday that the Armenian Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary is an important part of the capital’s historical center. A statement from the Baghdad Municipality indicated that the Mayor visited the church, accompanied by the Head of the Office of Christian, Yazidi, and Mandaean Religious Endowments, Rami Joseph Aghajan, Bishop Oshakan Kolkoulian, Head of the Armenian Orthodox Community in Iraq, and the Director General of the Rusafa Central Municipality. The visit was to share with the Christian community the occasion of the eve of the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Mayor emphasized that the church, whose construction dates back to 1639 AD, represents an important part of Baghdad’s historical center. It reflects the religious and cultural diversity that embodies the capital’s authenticity and rich history. He pointed out that Baghdad and the Baghdad Municipality belong to everyone, and this diversity is a responsibility that requires continuous communication with all components of society.

The Mayor further emphasized that the Baghdad Municipality is keen to be present at various events and gatherings and to serve all residents of the capital without discrimination. He explained that there are directives for municipal departments to continue providing services to places of worship belonging to various sects, religions, and denominations. This is especially important during events that witness a large influx of citizens, to ensure the smooth flow of services and maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the surrounding areas.
