Nineveh Antiquities Authority Initiates Rehabilitation of Ancient City of Hatra


Nineveh: The Nineveh Antiquities Authority has announced the launch of the first phase of the rehabilitation of the ancient city of Hatra, in partnership with an Italian organization.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Director of Antiquities and Heritage in Nineveh, Ruwaid, stated that the initial phase will focus on removing rubble and cleaning the site. These efforts are crucial for setting the stage for broader rehabilitation and preservation of the city’s historical landmarks. Ruwaid highlighted the significance of adhering to standards for maintaining archaeological sites to preserve Hatra’s architectural identity.



The project, which has attracted attention from relevant authorities, aims to enhance heritage and cultural tourism in the Nineveh Governorate. By rehabilitating Hatra, the site will become more accessible to visitors and researchers interested in its history and archaeological features. Ruwaid explained that the second phase will involve collaboration with UNESCO and the ALIPH Foundation to secure necessary funding. This phase will also include comprehensive site studies, the development of designs, and bills of quantities for rehabilitation work.



Ruwaid emphasized that the studies and designs will respect the archaeological site’s nature and historical significance, ensuring the preservation of its cultural style and original features. The rehabilitation of Hatra represents a significant step towards restoring its historical prominence and strengthening its presence on the archaeological tourism map of Nineveh and Iraq.
