Kathmandu: The death toll from the devastating mudslides that struck a border region between Nepal and China on Wednesday has risen to at least 270, while authorities continue to search for hundreds of missing tourists, Nepalese police announced on Thursday.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, earlier on Thursday, Nepalese authorities reported that 823 people were missing, including 393 foreign tourists. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities reported three deaths in Tibet, noting that 558 people remain missing within China. The total number of missing from this disaster has reached at least 1,300.

The US Geological Survey stated that the floods were triggered by an avalanche with enough force to cause a 5.2 magnitude earthquake and landslides.
