Basra: The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) conference aimed at enhancing employment opportunities and entrepreneurship in Basra has successfully concluded. The event was part of the “Towards More and Better Jobs and Safe Green Spaces” project, which seeks to bolster the private sector in southern Iraq by fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. The project also aims to support initiatives that contribute to job creation and reduce unemployment in the southern governorates.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Project Director Mohammed Abdul-Amir emphasized the pivotal role of the local government in Basra, led by Governor Asaad Al-Eidani, as a key partner and supporter of the ILO’s initiatives. The organization is actively engaged in training and qualifying young men and women through the Department of Labor and Vocational Training.
Abdul-Amir highlighted that the three-year program has achieved around 55% of its goals within an integrated work environment, collaborating with the Departments of Labor and Social Affairs through three training centers located in Abu Al-Khasib, Khor Al-Zubair, and Basra Governorate Center.
He further explained the ongoing cooperation between governmental and non-governmental institutions to organize training and qualification programs. These initiatives are designed to develop the skills of the governorate’s residents, enhancing their employment prospects while maintaining a green and safe environment in Basra.
Ahmed Jamal, Director of the Department of Labor and Vocational Training, stated that the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has been conducting numerous workshops and training courses. These efforts have significantly empowered young individuals, developed their personal and professional skills, and facilitated their entry into various employment fields.
Jamal also noted the department’s reception of a substantial number of job seekers, underscoring that creating job opportunities for young people requires collective efforts and the continuous organization of workshops, seminars, and training programs. This approach strengthens integrated collaboration among different entities.
