Erbil: The Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Region announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Federal Ministry of Interior, aimed at the mutual collection and registration of fines and traffic violations across the Kurdistan Region and the rest of the Iraqi governorates.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Minister of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Rebar Ahmed, highlighted that the previous lack of coordination allowed vehicles from the Kurdistan Region to evade fines when committing violations in federal provinces, and vice versa. The new agreement ensures that any traffic violation by vehicles from the region in central and southern provinces will be recorded and fines collected accordingly. Similarly, vehicles from other Iraqi provinces will face penalties when violating traffic rules within the Kurdistan Region.

Ahmed explained that while traffic laws are fundamentally unified nationwide, there are slight differences in some executive instructions or fine amounts. The memorandum addresses these discrepancies to ensure justice and law enforcement. The agreement’s primary goal is to regulate traffic and enhance public safety across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Ahmed emphasized the commitment of both Ministries of Interior in Erbil and Baghdad to reduce violations and establish traffic discipline on roads and streets throughout the country.
