Algiers: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has expressed the possibility that “criminal elements” may be responsible for the recent fires that have engulfed several provinces across Algeria.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, President Tebboune, during a visit to a hospital to see those injured by the fires, highlighted the potential for criminal involvement, citing the exceptional intensity of the blazes. He stated that comprehensive investigations will be conducted to determine the cause, while also pointing out that strong winds have complicated firefighting efforts.

Northern Algeria is no stranger to forest fires, particularly during the summer months when high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds create a volatile environment that can quickly lead to widespread fires. In recent years, these fires have claimed lives and caused significant destruction to forests, farmland, and property.

In response to the recurring threat, Algerian authorities have taken steps to enhance prevention a
nd monitoring strategies and have bolstered the preparedness of firefighting units and equipment to tackle such emergencies.
