Baghdad: Deputy Speaker of Parliament Farhad Amin Atroushi emphasized the importance of confining weapons to the state as a crucial factor in shaping Iraq’s foreign relations. Atroushi expressed the political forces’ unwavering support for the Prime Minister in handling this significant security issue.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Atroushi declared, “We support the Prime Minister and the government in the matter of restricting weapons to the state, which is an important Iraqi security issue.” He elaborated on the implications, noting that Iraq’s foreign relations with neighboring countries and the broader regional and global context hinge on this policy. Failure to restrict weapons to the state, he warned, could lead to strained and threatened international ties.

Atroushi also addressed the role of the Peshmerga forces, which have been a part of Iraq’s security framework since before the adoption of the Iraqi Constitution in 2005 and the establishment of the new state in 2003. They have been instrumental in combating dictatorship and operate under Article 121, Paragraph 5 of the constitutional text, which pertains to regional guard and internal security forces. He clarified that involving the Peshmerga in the weapons restriction policy is a separate issue that could complicate the situation.
