baghdad: The Karkh Criminal Court issued a six-year prison sentence on Tuesday against five women convicted of human trafficking. The Supreme Judicial Council stated in a press release received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that “the Karkh Criminal Court sentenced five women to six years in prison for the crime of human trafficking.”

According to Iraqi News Agency, the convicted mother sold her newborn child in collusion with four other women for three million Iraqi dinars. The statement from the Supreme Judicial Council provided details on the operation, highlighting the concerning nature of the crime.

The statement further noted that “the sentence was issued against them based on the provisions of Article 6/First and Fifth of the Anti-Human Trafficking Law No. 28 of 2012, in conjunction with Articles 47, 48, and 49 regarding complicity, and in accordance with the provisions of Article 132/2 of the Penal Code.” The court’s decision underscores the legal ramifications for those involved in trafficking offenses, aiming to deter similar crimes in the future.
