Baghdad: The Ministry of Transport said on Tuesday that 84 earthquakes were recorded during August 2026.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the General Authority for Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring stated in a report issued by the Ministry of Transport that the Iraqi Seismic Monitoring Network documented 84 earthquakes in August 2026. These seismic activities occurred both within Iraq and in neighboring regions.

The Seismic Monitoring Department’s monthly report indicated that out of the total, 41 earthquakes took place within Iraqi borders, while 43 occurred outside Iraq near its borders. The earthquakes varied in magnitude from 1 to 7.4, with focal depths ranging between 7 and 38 kilometers.

The report highlighted that the seismic activity was predominantly concentrated in four Iraqi provinces. Kirkuk experienced the highest frequency with 25 earthquakes, followed by Sulaymaniyah with nine, Diyala with six, and Erbil with one.

The report further detailed that the eastern and southeastern areas of Kirkuk province were notably active for four days, from July 30 to August 2, 2026, during which 46 earthquakes were recorded. Residents in these areas felt several stronger tremors, particularly in proximity to the epicenters, affecting most parts of Kirkuk province and some areas in the Kurdistan Region.

It also noted that the western and southwestern regions of Iraq experienced no significant seismic activity during the month. The distribution of these seismic events is attributed to the movement of the Arabian Plate and Iraq’s geographical position in the northeastern segment of the region, adjacent to areas of continental collision.
