Baghdad: During its inaugural meeting, the Committee for Monitoring Sectarian and Ethnic Discourse highlighted the necessity for firm action against incitement, with a commitment to uphold comprehensive and fair application of the law. The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, attended by key figures including Lieutenant General Abdul Amir al-Shammari and Lieutenant General Saad Maan, alongside members from various security agencies.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Director of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief, al-Shammari, emphasized the importance of dealing decisively with all instances of incitement and sectarian discourse, regardless of the parties involved. He stressed that the application of the law should be without exception, aiming to strengthen security, consolidate coexistence, and preserve national unity in Iraq.

Al-Shammari mentioned that the judiciary would be the final authority in taking legal measures against promoters of sectarian discourse. He underscored the importance of organizing the committee’s work through clear roles and responsibilities, which would aid in efficiently achieving its objectives.

Lieutenant General Saad Maan, chairing the committee, reiterated their commitment to professionalism and responsibility in monitoring speeches with inflammatory sectarian, ethnic, or racial content. He praised the directives from al-Shammari, which will guide the committee’s efforts in curbing hate speech and supporting community security.

The formation of this committee is part of broader efforts to confront divisive speeches, promote social peace, and maintain the integrity of Iraq’s national fabric.
