Paris: Iraq has taken a significant step in promoting its film industry by participating in the “Summit of Light” in France and joining the newly formed international “Light Alliance.” Represented by Dr. Arif Al-Saadi, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Cultural Affairs, Iraq joined other global leaders and filmmakers at the first-ever summit dedicated to the film and motion picture industry.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a substantial £1 billion initiative aimed at bolstering the global film industry. This investment is set to develop film policies, facilitate international collaboration, and create a supportive environment for film production and the exchange of expertise.

During the summit, Dr. Al-Saadi engaged in discussions with President Macron to explore avenues for supporting the Iraqi film industry. A key focus was the activation of a memorandum of understanding signed last October between Iraq and the French National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC). This agreement seeks to enhance cooperation in cinema, support Iraqi filmmakers, and empower emerging talent in the industry.

Additionally, Iraq’s accession to the “Light Alliance” was announced by Dr. Al-Saadi. This coalition, established during the summit, aims to strengthen the film sector, advance the moving image industry, and foster cinematic cooperation among member states.

The Iraqi delegation was bolstered by the presence of artist Warith Kuwaish, whose extensive network in the film sector has been instrumental in establishing partnerships with international film institutions. These efforts are expected to support the sustainability of Iraqi film production and its integration into global cinema.
