Baghdad: The Ministry of Transport confirms the stability of Iraqi airspace, rules out its closure, and announces 9 new international destinations. The Ministry of Transport ruled out today the closure of the country’s airspace in the coming period due to regional security developments, announcing its success in establishing alternative air routes and opening nine new international destinations from three local airports.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Director General of the General Company for Airports and Air Navigation Management, Ihab Saad, confirmed in a statement that Iraqi airspace enjoys complete stability and has not witnessed any closures during the past months. He pointed out that the opening of alternative routes was done in cooperation with relevant international organizations to ensure the smooth flow and safety of air navigation until regional calm returns.

The Director also highlighted the most prominent developments in the aviation and air navigation sector and the operational indicators, in which the number of passengers through Iraqi airports exceeded 500,000 passengers during the third quarter of 2026, reflecting the growing confidence in the safety of the national airspace. The nine new international destinations are: Baghdad Airport (3 routes) to Moscow, Tunis, and Muscat; Kirkuk Airport (4 routes) to Antalya, Beirut, Dubai, and Trabzon; and Basra Airport (2 routes) to Baku and Delhi.

These steps aim to develop the air transport sector, enhance the economic returns of Iraqi airspace, and support the activity of local airports to solidify Iraq’s position on the regional and international aviation map.
