Baghdad: The Supreme Judicial Council is hosting a meeting to formulate a unified vision regarding the case of foreign convicts who were transferred from Syria to Iraq. The Supreme Judicial Council hosted a meeting on Wednesday, chaired by its president, Judge Faiq Zaidan, to formulate a unified vision regarding the cases of foreign convicts transferred from Syria to Iraq.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting was attended by prominent figures, including Minister of Justice Khalid Shawani, Director of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir al-Shammari, and Head of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, Hamid al-Shatri. Other key attendees were Head of the National Security Service, Basim al-Badri, National Security Advisor Qasim al-Aboudi, Head of the Counter-Terrorism Service, Lieutenant General Zaid Houshi, and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral and Legal Affairs, Ambassador Shorsh Khalid. Chief Prosecutor Adel Khudair, Head of the Judicial Oversight Authority, Judge Laith Jabr, and Judge Ali Hussein Jafat, Head of the First Karkh Investigation Court and Head of the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation, were also present.
The agenda focused on creating a cohesive strategy for addressing the cases of foreign detainees and convicts moved from Syria to Iraq. This follows the completion of the investigation and interrogation stages by the First Karkh Investigation Court, moving the process towards the trial phase.
Concluding the meeting, the Council established a unified stance on handling these individuals. The consensus involves addressing each case systematically, in line with bilateral agreements between Iraq and the convicts’ countries of origin, alongside Iraqi laws and reciprocity principles. Additionally, the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation will evaluate any proposals or assistance offered by these countries or international bodies to aid Iraq in managing this issue.
