Tiafoe Advances to US Open Semifinals After Comeback Victory

New york: American Frances Tiafoe recovered from a two-set deficit and a break to defeat his compatriot Alex Mikkelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6) at the US Open on Wednesday, reaching the semifinals for the third time.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Tiafoe, the 11th seed, appeared to lose his edge early in the match before regaining his momentum in the third set. He clinched it with a powerful forehand winner amidst cheers from the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd.

Mikkelsen, who has been largely overlooked during his best Grand Slam career, commanded respect on America’s biggest tennis venue with 21 aces. Tiafoe paused his celebrations to console the 22-year-old in a long embrace by the net.

In the semifinals, Tiafoe will face fellow American Ben Chilton, who overcame defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
