Baghdad: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Iraq launched its strategic plan for the 2025-2029 period today, Thursday, in the presence of high-ranking officials and representatives from diplomatic missions and civil society.
According to Iraqi News Agency, Pascal Reyntjens, IOM Chief of Mission in Iraq, delivered a speech at the launch ceremony. He emphasized the significant role the Kurdistan Region has played in supporting affected individuals, displaced persons, refugees, and migrants, transforming it into a central hub for international cooperation and economic activity. He noted that the new strategic plan is designed to align with the evolving circumstances in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, with a focus on fostering stability and resilience.
Reyntjens outlined that the strategy is built on three main objectives: saving lives and protecting people on the move, advancing sustainable solutions to displacement, and creating pathways for regular migration. He stressed that the strategy’s implementation would be guided by government leadership and strong partnerships, supported by evidence and practical results for individuals and institutions. The strategy also aims to tackle issues related to climate change, water scarcity, job creation, and sustainable livelihoods. He underscored the necessity for sustained commitment, enhanced coordination between regional and federal institutions, and multi-year investment from partners to successfully implement the strategy.
Reyntjens highlighted existing cooperation efforts, which include vital initiatives like working with the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC) to develop sustainable solutions for displaced persons in Dahuk camps. Additionally, IOM collaborates with the Enterprise Development Fund (EDF) and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs to support small and medium-sized enterprises and foster job opportunities.
