Baghdad: The General Authority of Customs has announced the commencement of implementing the Cabinet’s decision to extend the vehicle import period. This decision, outlined in Cabinet Decision No. (468) of 2026, extends the import period for 2024 model vehicles until November 1, 2026, superseding regulations set by Cabinet Decision No. (215) of 2009.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the extension addresses the challenges posed by regional circumstances, including supply chain disruptions, port closures, and shipping delays, which have affected vehicle arrivals and the completion of import procedures within previously specified timeframes. Thamer Qasim Dawood, Director General of the General Authority of Customs, stated that the authority, following directives from Finance Minister Falih Sari, has initiated the necessary measures for the decision’s implementation. This includes informing relevant customs directorates and centers to take appropriate action.

The authority has instructed its staff to fa
cilitate the procedures for 2024 model vehicles within the new timeframe, ensuring operations’ smoothness while adhering to legal and regulatory frameworks. The aim is to maintain the accuracy and integrity of customs procedures.

Dawood emphasized the commitment to monitoring the implementation process across all relevant centers to ensure the decision achieves its intended objectives. This includes addressing the impacts of exceptional circumstances and shipping delays, removing obstacles for citizens and merchants, while maintaining necessary oversight and protecting public funds.
