Garakad: Somali pirates announced the release of the merchant ship “Saward” on Saturday after holding it captive since April. The ship was hijacked off the coast of Somalia, and its release came after the pirates received a ransom.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the European Union’s naval mission “Atalanta” had previously reported the hijacking of the oil tanker “Honor 25” on April 21, followed by the capture of the ship “Saward” on April 26. The ships were taken by Somali pirates, who are known for targeting vessels off the Somali coast to demand ransoms.

A security source in Puntland confirmed that the pirates released the ship near Garakad. The crew members remained on board at the time of release, while the hijackers departed in several vehicles towards the city. The security source noted that a ransom was paid for the ship’s release but did not disclose the amount.

Armed groups of Somali pirates have been active in the region, aiming to secure financial gains through ship hijackings. Since 2008, Operation Atalanta has been operational to curb piracy in the area. Efforts have led to a significant decline in kidnappings since 2013.
