Sulaimaniyah: The Ministry of Education is actively exploring mechanisms to address climate change within kindergartens and schools. This initiative was the focus of a workshop held in Sulaimaniyah on Saturday, where the ministry discussed various strategies for integrating climate change solutions into the educational system.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the workshop highlighted the results of a joint study on the impact of climate change on Iraq’s education sector. This study was conducted in collaboration with UNICEF and funded by the European Union. The technical committee leading the discussions included the Director General of Curricula and representatives from the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment.

The workshop, conducted over two days in a hybrid format, included both in-person and virtual sessions. On the first day, participants examined a draft study focusing on the impact of climate change on educational institutions. The second day was dedicated to discussing the school climate action planning tool and a Training of Trainers (ToT) guide for teachers, emphasizing the role of education in promoting environmental awareness among students.

The sessions were designed to encourage dialogue, with facilitated discussions and working groups aimed at exchanging perspectives and posing questions about the guide. These activities led to the establishment of timelines, roles, responsibilities, and next steps in the implementation of climate change solutions within the education sector.
