Iraq Aims to Strengthen Ties with Neighbors and Avoid Regional Blocs

Baghdad:Al-Hakim: In remarks made by Ammar al-Hakim, the head of Iraq’s National Wisdom Movement, it was emphasized that Iraq is committed to engaging with all parties and steering clear of involvement in regional blocs. Al-Hakim expressed a desire to mend relationships with neighboring countries in the wake of recent events.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Hakim highlighted the importance of communication with Egypt, referring to it as the “big brother” of Arab nations, and noted ongoing interactions with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. He further mentioned that the Gulf Cooperation Council countries have maintained their diplomatic presence in Iraq, despite the country’s unique circumstances and certain positions held by Iranian officials.

Al-Hakim discussed the historical context of the war against Iran and its repercussions, emphasizing solidarity with the Iranian people against sanctions. He remarked on the significant impact of past sanctions on the Iraqi population and noted Iraq’s efforts to avoid similar situations.

He explained that Iraq was the first nation to secure a waiver from the United States, allowing Najaf International Airport to engage in dealings with Iran. This was made possible through mutual understanding with the U.S., which also facilitated arrangements for pilgrims and visitors. He expressed gratitude toward the Iraqi government and others who contributed to resolving the air embargo issue, highlighting the unique relationship between Iraq and Iran.

Al-Hakim clarified that decisions were made to protect Iraqis from sanctions, not out of animosity, and acknowledged clear messages from the U.S. regarding compliance with the air embargo. He stressed the need to balance safeguarding the state and respecting public sentiment.

On the topic of the International Coalition, Al-Hakim praised the assistance provided by 84 nations in defeating ISIS and their support in international forums. He regarded the day marking sovereignty and the end of the Coalition’s operations as a symbol of Iraq’s recovery. He also emphasized the responsibility of reassuring Iraqi partners through coordination and understanding to alleviate any concerns.
