Iraqi President Emphasizes State Control Over Arms as Key to Sovereignty

Baghdad:President Nizar Amidi of Iraq has stressed the importance of placing arms under state control as a vital measure for safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, President Amidi made this assertion in a statement marking Sovereignty Day, highlighting the non-negotiable principles of Iraq’s sovereignty, independence, territorial unity, and institutional integrity. He emphasized that the will and interests of the Iraqi people are central to shaping the country’s present and future.

The President underlined that true sovereignty is achieved through a strong state with robust institutions and rule of law, which holds exclusive authority over sovereign decisions. This includes the exclusive right of the state and its constitutional bodies to make decisions regarding peace and war.

Amidi further called on political and national forces to prioritize the unity of Iraqi decision-making, national cohesion, and the supreme interests of the state. He urged them to protect Iraq from conflicts and political disputes.

He also noted Iraq’s transition to a new phase of international relations following the conclusion of the International Coalition’s mission. This phase is characterized by full sovereignty, balanced partnerships, mutual interests, and non-interference in internal affairs. Iraq aims to expand its global political, economic, trade, and cultural ties.

On Sovereignty Day, the President honored Iraq’s martyrs from various forces who sacrificed their lives in the fight against ISIS, expressing reverence and gratitude for their contributions to the nation’s security and unity.
