Muqtada al-Sadr Disbands Promised Day Brigade as US Presence Ends in Iraq

Baghdad:Leader of the Sadrist Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, has announced the dissolution of the “Promised Day Brigade,” a combat wing of the movement, in conjunction with the conclusion of the US and International Coalition presence in Iraq, marking the celebration of Iraqi Sovereignty Day.

According to the National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sadr issued a warning to the United States and neighboring countries against interference in Iraqi political and ideological matters. He called for the US military to compensate Iraq for damages caused during its occupation and expressed gratitude to those who contributed to achieving Iraqi sovereignty. He also urged the restriction of arms possession to state control, advocated for political leaders to step down to make room for new faces to tackle corruption, and emphasized the need to strengthen security agencies.

In a statement on the X platform, al-Sadr expressed thanks to God and the early resistance fighters, announcing Iraq’s independence and the end of US and International Coalition presence. He outlined several actions, including the transformation of the “Imam’s Army” into the “Ansar of Imam al-Mahdi” institution.

Al-Sadr demanded compensation from the US military for the damages resulting from its occupation and advised legal claims to be filed for this purpose. He also cautioned against external interference in Iraqi affairs, warning it could lead to severed relations and could drag Iraq into regional conflicts. He expressed hope for diplomatic relations with the United States based on reciprocity and respect.

He stressed that ending the occupation requires consolidating all arms under state control with a well-organized program that satisfies both the public and religious authorities. Additionally, he called for political leaders to retire, allowing new leaders to combat corruption and pursue reform. Strengthening and activating all branches of the security forces, particularly the Border Guards, was also highlighted as a priority.
