Baghdad:U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has emphasized that any agreement with Iran must include a significant reduction in its uranium enrichment capabilities to resolve the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Vance clarified in an interview that the United States is looking for concrete actions from Tehran, not just promises, to ensure that Iran does not pursue nuclear weapons. He expressed concerns over Iran’s uranium enrichment levels, which have reached 60%, questioning the necessity of such enrichment if Iran is not aiming to develop nuclear arms.
Vance stressed that the United States is open to an agreement with Iran but insists on actions over words. He highlighted challenges in negotiations due to uncertainties about the decision-making authority in Tehran, despite discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The conflict, which has persisted for over seven months, included military actions from both sides starting in February 2026. Although a memorandum to halt hostilities was signed in mid-June, exchanges of strikes continued. Direct fighting has ceased, but the U.S. now applies economic pressure on Iran.
The situation has affected global shipping, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil and gas supply route, leading to increased prices worldwide.
