Al-Lami Advocates for Enhanced Press Freedom Protections and Highlights Journalist Safety in Iraq

Damascus:President of the Arab Journalists Federation, Moaid Al-Lami, has emphasized the critical need to adhere to laws protecting press freedom and to review any legislation that may hinder journalistic work or conflict with international standards. His remarks were made during a conference of the Federation’s Permanent Committee for Press Freedoms in Damascus.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Lami also expressed support for Syrian journalists and announced forthcoming coordination with the Syrian Minister of Information. He noted the historical significance of Damascus as a hub for scholars, politicians, and writers in the Arab world.

Al-Lami reported that the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate had documented improvements in journalist safety from June 2025 to June 2026, crediting political and security stability and protective laws. There were no reported assaults against journalists during this period, a marked change from previous years.

The syndicate has been active in supporting media institutions and journalists by maintaining contact with official authorities and coordinating with the Supreme Judicial Council. This coordination has facilitated journalists’ work and resolved most legal cases in their favor.

Efforts have also been made to implement Journalists’ Rights Law No. 21 of 2011, ensuring a safe working environment and securing journalists’ rights and protections. There is ongoing collaboration with media offices in government departments to ensure accurate information dissemination.

Al-Lami reiterated the importance of fully implementing protective laws and reviewing any restrictive legislation. The syndicate continues to assist media organizations, overcoming obstacles and ensuring transparency and access to information.
