Baghdad: MP Ashwaq al-Jaf from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has asserted that the Kurds are not responsible for delaying the parliamentary session aimed at electing the President of the Republic.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Jaf stated that during the initial session intended for the presidential election, Kurdish members of parliament were present in significant numbers and prepared to cast their votes for the candidates. However, the Speaker of Parliament decided to postpone the session without providing convincing reasons for the delay.
Al-Jaf further explained that while the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have yet to reach an agreement on a single presidential candidate, they are open to entering the session with multiple candidates. This approach would allow for a national consensus, enabling MPs to elect one of the candidates for the presidency and thereby resolving the issue.
She emphasized that Kurdish MPs remain ready to participate in the electoral session as soon as it is rescheduled, highlighting their commitment to moving the process forward.
