Baghdad: Head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, affirmed his unwavering stance today, stating that he will not withdraw from the candidacy for the Iraqi prime ministership. He clarified that recent American communications are directed at the Iraqi state as a whole rather than at him personally.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Maliki emphasized in a televised interview the need for all weapons to be controlled by and answerable to the state under a unified command. He expressed opposition to the smuggling of oil and dollars from Iraq and advocated for Iraq to engage with major world powers. He highlighted the importance of respecting the state’s autonomy and will, describing the framework as a crucial institution for the national situation.
Al-Maliki mentioned the peaceful withdrawal of American forces from Iraq and underscored the essential nature of the relationship with the American side for Iraq’s recovery. He asserted that Iraq’s relationships with Iran and other countries are grounded in mutual interests and rejected any external interference in Iraq’s sovereignty. He stressed that Iraq would not become a satellite state managed by foreign powers.
He noted Washington’s preference for an Iraqi government devoid of representatives from armed factions, asserting that the next government will be civilian. Al-Maliki stated that participants in the government must lay down their arms and acknowledged that some factions are prepared to surrender their weapons to prevent endangering Iraq.
Al-Maliki reiterated his policy against exploiting sectarianism among Iraq’s populace and mentioned efforts to establish agreements with regional and global countries. He assured that Iraq poses no threat to regional security and is committed to protecting the region’s interests. He firmly stated that Iraq will not permit any violations against foreign embassies or official interests within its territory.
He concluded by addressing Iraq’s challenging economic situation, advocating for radical solutions and an economic revival. He called for a concerted national effort to develop Iraq’s economy and ensure the provision of necessary services to its citizens.
