Al-Sadiqoun Bloc Urges Constitutional Review Committee Formation

Accra:Al-Sadiqoun Parliamentary Bloc has urged the Council of Representatives to swiftly form a committee to review the Constitution as per Article 142, proposing that this be done at the earliest regular parliamentary session. The committee’s work is to begin under a publicly announced timetable.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the bloc plans to submit a working paper addressing issues that have hindered the completion of the constitutional process for forming state authorities. Key issues include the quorum required for electing the President of the Republic, defining the largest parliamentary bloc, and constitutional deadlines with no legal consequences for violations.

The bloc emphasized its commitment to fundamental principles, rights, and freedoms, stating that these should not be subject to negotiation. It insisted that any amendments affecting these areas must meet the stringent requirements outlined in Article 126 of the Constitution.

Additionally, Al-Sadiqoun called for a serious dialogue involving all parliamentary blocs and constitutional law specialists, stressing that constitutional amendments lacking Iraqi consensus would not be viable.
