Baghdad: Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the strategic importance of rebuilding the Iraqi army in response to the threats of terrorism that afflicted the nation. In a speech during the central celebration marking the 104th anniversary of the founding of the Iraqi army, Al-Sudani highlighted the army’s historical challenges and its transformation.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani reflected on the army’s past, noting that it had endured significant challenges, including being embroiled in political conflicts and wars under a dictatorial regime. These conflicts drained the army’s resources and led to its disintegration. He acknowledged the bravery of many armed forces members who resisted the former regime, often facing execution and torture.

Al-Sudani continued by stating that with the emergence of freedom in Iraq, the army regained its rightful role as a defender of the nation and its people. The fall of the dictatorial regime marked a shift where the army was no longer used as a tool for oppression. This shift is seen as a vital achievement of Iraq’s democratic system, which opposes the monopolization of power and reckless actions that could endanger the country.

He further explained that in the face of terrorism, the foremost priority was to reconstruct the army by uniting its professional national components. This effort aimed to reinforce the Iraqi state’s existence and institutions. The expansion of army units and formations was designed to meet the challenges and requirements of the time, addressing the threats to the homeland.
