Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has initiated comprehensive measures aimed at enhancing the civil defense response levels and improving the preparedness of institutions, public places, and various economic and service projects concerning public safety.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani chaired an emergency meeting with governors on Sunday, which was attended by relevant ministers to deliberate on the measures for public safety and civil defense in institutions and public areas. During the meeting, he underscored the importance of effective measures to prevent the recurrence of unfortunate incidents and fires in commercial and economic activities.

Al-Sudani highlighted that the Civil Defense Law clearly outlines mechanisms and defines tasks, duties, and powers. He also mentioned the amendments proposed by the Ministry of Interior in July 2023, which are currently pending in Parliament. He emphasized the necessity for a rapid, thoughtful, and pre-planned response, which requires the presence of officials on the ground.

The Prime Minister instructed governors to prioritize the civil defense committees’ work in their respective governorates, ensuring the implementation of comprehensive safety procedures and preventing violations that endanger lives. He stressed that the governor holds the position of the primary executive officer responsible for these measures.
