Baghdad: Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi has directed the acquisition of 47,000 megawatts of electricity, marking a significant development in Iraq’s energy sector. During a visit to the Ministry of Electricity headquarters, al-Zaidi underscored the government’s commitment to doubling electricity production and distribution by 2027, as part of an overarching strategy to enhance the country’s electrical infrastructure.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Zaidi’s office released a statement highlighting his engagement with ministry officials and senior staff. During the meeting, he emphasized the importance of increasing efforts to combat corruption and carry out an urgent assessment of power supply to all available types of stations. This initiative aims to ensure a marked improvement in the electricity supply ahead of the upcoming summer months.

Al-Zaidi outlined specific directives to achieve these goals, including comprehensive maintenance of the currently produced 30,000 megawatts and procuring at least 10,000 megawatts of imported power from neighboring countries. Additionally, the plan involves purchasing 37,000 megawatts, sourced from various sectors: 15,000 megawatts from GE, 12,000 megawatts from solar energy, and 10,000 megawatts from thermal power. This strategic move is intended to address longstanding issues in Iraq’s electricity sector, aiming to end stagnation and curb waste and corruption.
