Baghdad: The annual Scientific Conference on Combating Drugs kicked off on Thursday morning, under the patronage of the Higher National Commission for Drug and Psychotropic Substances Affairs at the Ministry of Health, held under the slogan: ‘Towards a drug-free society. Through knowledge and cooperation, we build the community.’ The opening session was attended by representatives from health and medical institutions, international missions, universities, and the Ministries of Interior, Justice, Higher Education, Education, and Labor, along with researchers and specialists.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, throughout its live panel sessions, the conference presents scientific studies and specialized research addressing strategies to curb the growing drug phenomenon. It also showcases the key achievements of the Higher National Commission during the current year, including quantities of drugs seized and destroyed in cooperation with security and judicial authorities. In addition, success stories of individuals recovering from addiction in Ministry of Health rehabilitation and psychological treatment centers are being highlighted.

The conference also features an awareness photo exhibition on the dangers and effects of drugs, prepared by the Office of the National Mental Health Advisor, aimed at strengthening public awareness of this issue.

On Wednesday, scientific sessions were held covering four main themes: security and intelligence, legislation and laws, health care and rehabilitation, and awareness and education. The conference’s final recommendations are expected to be announced at the conclusion of its proceedings.
