Baghdad: The Baghdad Environment Directorate is taking decisive regulatory and legal actions against the illegal Al-Nahrawan landfill site.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Directorate has intensified its field monitoring and oversight efforts to assess the landfill’s compliance with legal and environmental regulations. Director Sadiq Al-Moussawi revealed that a team from the Service Activities Monitoring Division, supported by the Rusafa Environmental Police, conducted a thorough environmental inspection of the site. The inspection uncovered ongoing waste burning across several areas of the landfill, which is causing the emission of harmful smoke and gases. Additionally, the site continues to operate illegally, lacking the necessary environmental requirements for a proper landfill, and unauthorized individuals were found interfering with the waste.

Al-Moussawi highlighted that legal measures, including closure orders and fines, had previously been issued against the site due to its lack of environmental approval. He assured that the Directorate would persist in enforcing the necessary legal procedures to address the illegal activities, in line with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
