Berri Warns of Israel’s Intention to Lure Lebanon into Normalizing Relations

Beirut: Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri announced, “Israel intends to lure Lebanon into political negotiations to normalize relations between the two countries,” adding, “Lebanon is not on this list.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Berri emphasized in a press interview that Lebanon has an agreement supported internationally and by Arab nations, as well as endorsed by the United Nations. He stated that Lebanon is committed to this agreement’s implementation, while Israel is the party obstructing it and attempting to circumvent its terms.

Berri highlighted that the Lebanese Army is prepared to complete its deployment south of the Litani River. However, he noted that Israel’s refusal to withdraw from several points presents a significant barrier. He clarified that Hezbollah remains committed to the agreement, has not obstructed its implementation, and has withdrawn from south of the Litani River. Despite Israel’s persistent violations and continued attacks on southern towns, including the Bekaa Valley and the international border with Syria, Hezbollah has maintained a ceasefire for six months without firing a shot.

Berri pointed out that Hezbollah refrains from responding to Israeli ceasefire violations, follows a policy of restraint, and supports the Lebanese state in implementing the agreement and consolidating the ceasefire. He rejected the proposal to form a civilian committee to negotiate with Israel, arguing that it could undermine the ceasefire agreement. He insisted that the agreement should be implemented under the auspices of UNIFIL and supervised by the “Quintet” committee.
