Baku:The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy reported the sinking of a container ship carrying more than 2,500 containers this morning. The incident occurred after the ship struck a naval mine and caught fire in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Iranian statement indicated that the ship was navigating a high-risk, unauthorized route within the Strait of Hormuz when it collided with the mine. This collision led to an explosion, and despite efforts to control the blaze, the ship eventually sank.
The Iranian Navy has advised vessels in the area to be vigilant to avoid colliding with the containers now floating on the water’s surface. This incident comes after Tehran’s announcement of new measures for managing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, including threats to target vessels using unauthorized routes.
