Iraq to Integrate Sinjar Protection Units into Official Security Forces

Baghdad:The spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah al-Numan, announced plans to formally integrate the Sinjar Protection Units (YBŞ) into Iraq’s official security institutions. A ceremony marking this transition and the transfer of security responsibilities for Mount Sinjar to federal authorities is set to take place on Monday.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the ceremony will be supervised by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ali Faleh al-Zaidi. This move aligns with the Iraqi government’s policy to ensure that weapons remain under state control, marking a new phase of security responsibility in the Sinjar district.

The government acknowledged the Yazidi community’s sacrifices in defending Iraq, particularly the Sinjar district, against terrorist and extremist groups. These efforts are commended for their adherence to national principles and the Constitution, which prohibits the formation of armed groups outside the official armed forces.

Al-Numan emphasized the federal government’s responsibility to protect the rights of Yazidis who opposed terrorism and extremist ideologies, enduring significant losses in the process. The government is also committed to compensating the families of victims affected by terrorism and working towards the reconstruction of the Sinjar district.
