Detainee Dies in Basra Hospital Amid Drug Charges and Surgery Complications

Basra: A detainee held on drug charges died at Al-Zubair General Hospital in Basra.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Human Rights Office in Basra announced the death of a detainee who had been held under the Anti-Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law. The detainee, born in 1999 and a resident of Abu Al-Khasib district, was arrested seven months ago under the same law.

The detainee sustained gunshot wounds and underwent surgery last May. Mahdi Al-Tamimi, the director of the Human Rights Office in Basra, stated that the detainee had colon strengthening surgery on July 5th. Subsequently, he was transferred to Al-Zubair General Hospital on July 12th due to a decline in his health. Although discharged the same day, his condition led to a return to the hospital on July 15th and again on July 31st when his health deteriorated further, resulting in his death.

Al-Tamimi emphasized that the Human Rights Office is currently awaiting the forensic report to ascertain the cause of death.
