Diyala: The College of Basic Education at Diyala University held its second periodic conference on combating extremism under the slogan “Together Towards a Safe Environment for Building a Tolerant and Extremist-Free Society.” The conference featured scientific and research sessions focusing on the causes of extremism and its various effects on society, intellect, and security. It also highlighted the significance of utilizing scientific research and academic knowledge to develop solutions and approaches that enhance intellectual security and foster a cohesive society marked by stability and peace.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, University President Tahseen Hussein Mubarak, who attended the conference, stressed that combating extremism is a collective responsibility that requires the combined efforts of academic, cultural, community, and security institutions. He stated that the university, as a hub of science and knowledge, plays a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting the values of moderation, dialogue, and acceptance.

Mubarak emphasized that the conference’s theme reflects the university’s belief in science and enlightened thought as the primary defense against extremist ideologies. He expressed hope that the conference would yield practical and applicable scientific recommendations to bolster intellectual security, protect youth from destructive ideas, and establish a culture of tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Ayman Abdul Aoun, Dean of the College of Basic Education, noted that the conference’s organization is rooted in the college’s commitment to its scientific and educational role in addressing phenomena that threaten societal security and stability, such as intellectual and behavioral extremism. He highlighted the educational institution’s role in nurturing conscious and moderate individuals by instilling values of dialogue, tolerance, respect for diversity, and rejection of hatred. Aoun remarked that the conference serves as a significant scientific platform for exchanging visions and experiences and discussing scientific methods to tackle extremism, ultimately leading to recommendations that support intellectual security and the creation of a safe, tolerant society free from extremism.

The conference aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4, which focuses on Quality Education by promoting education based on peace, tolerance, and human rights values, and Goal 16, which emphasizes Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions by contributing to the development of secure, stable, and inclusive societies, spreading a culture of peace, and reducing violence and extremism.
