DMC Urges Google to Address Offensive Content on Sayyida Zainab Shrine

Damascus: The Digital Media Center (DMC) has issued a warning about recent alterations to the listing of the Sayyida Zainab Shrine in Damascus on Google Maps, which included inappropriate details.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, this digital tampering with a revered religious site violates professional conduct standards on global platforms and threatens social harmony by encouraging sectarian and hateful narratives.

The DMC emphasizes the potential negative impact on millions of users, which could lead to significant social unrest. The center holds Google accountable, urging the company to promptly remove the offensive content and to implement stringent preventive measures to avoid similar violations in the future. The focus is especially on the protection of religious sites and symbols.

Furthermore, the DMC has called upon the Communications and Media Commission in Iraq to leverage its constitutional and ethical authority by initiating an official investigation. The center advises immediate comm
unication with Google and suggests threatening legal and administrative actions if necessary. The DMC highlights the need for measures similar to those in countries like China and Russia, which involve regulating or restricting certain Google services unless the company ensures fair and neutral content that respects religious sites.

The DMC stresses that respect for religious sanctities should be a priority for major technology platforms to maintain digital security and social peace.
